Create a High Density Text Question

A High Density Text Question asks participants to select one or more text-based responses. The answer options are displayed closely together as pill shapes.

A High Density Text Question works well for questions that have many short, text-based response options. Instead of stacking the responses vertically and forcing participants to scroll through a long list, you can create a better responding experience by optimizing screen space usage. Several responses can appear in the same row. The exact number of responses in a row depends on text length and screen width.

  1. On the Dashboard or the Activities page, click the activity name, and then click Build.
  2. Click Add Screen and select Text Question.
Result: A new Text Question appears in the Activity Content area.
  3. In the Screen Rules editor, turn the Multiple Choice toggle on or off.

If the toggle is off, the question is a Single Choice question in which participants can only select one response.

If the toggle is on, the question is a Multiple Choice question in which participants can select one or more responses.

  4. Optional: Edit the screen name.

In the Activity Content area, click the edit button on the right and type a new name. This name is not visible to participants.

  5. Select or clear Screen Rules.
    Option Description
    Share Back Results

Show participants the question results after they provide an answer.

    Randomize Selections

This option randomizes the order in which responses are displayed. Responses are randomized every time the activity is presented to a participant. In reporting, responses are displayed in authored order.

You can also select or clear Pin Response. Pinned responses always stay in place according to the authored order while other responses are randomized. If you select this option, select the responses to pin.

    Make Response Optional

By default, question screens require a response. Select this option to allow participants to proceed to the next screen without answering.

You can also select or clear Show Skip.

    • When selected, a Skip Question control appears separately from the transition and submission button. Participants can click Skip Question to skip the question, or they can answer the question and then click the transition and submission button.
    • When cleared, only the transition and submission button appears. Participants click the transition and submission button to either skip the question or proceed.
Tip: Customize the Skip Question control's text and appearance by clicking it in the preview pane.
Minimum Selection Specify the minimum number of responses that participants must choose. If you select this option, use the plus and minus buttons to enter the number.
Maximum Selection Specify the maximum number of responses that participants can choose. If you select this option, use the plus and minus buttons to enter the number.
    Set Exclusive Response

Specify a response that, once selected, prevents participants from selecting others. If you select this option, choose the exclusive response.

    Show Prompt Text

Show participants additional prompt text beneath the question text ("Select all that apply"). You can edit the default text and the appearance of the text element.

Note: The first three Screen Rules apply to both question types. The latter four Screen Rules apply to Multiple Choice questions.

  1. Set the respondent journey.
This step is required for any screen that is not the last screen in the Activity Content area. You should also preview the respondent journey to ensure there are no errors.
  2. Type the question and format the question text.
  3. Type the response labels and format the response text.
  4. In the preview pane, edit the answer area.
    1. Select the entire answer area so that the answer options edit toolbar appears.
    2. Choose the High Density answer option shape.
    3. Adjust the answer option padding.
    4. Adjust the spacing between answer options.
    5. Select an answer and use the up and down arrows to move the answer to a different position in the list.
For more information about these settings, see Edit toolbar.
  5. To add a response, in the preview pane, click Add Element > Choice Question > Text.
  6. To delete a response, in the preview pane, select a response and then click Delete.
  7. Add an image as a background.
    Tip:
  8. For multilingual activities, add text translations.
  9. Edit the transition and submission button.
  10. Optional: Select or clear Treat the response as sensitive data.
  11. Optional: Customize your screen elements.
  12. To preview the activity while still building it, on the activity toolbar, click Preview.

The preview opens in a new browser tab. Select a device type to simulate a screen size. Device type options include:

    • Phone
    • Tablet
    • Desktop

For multilingual activities, you can also select the preview language from the language menu.

Previewing the activity throughout the building process gives you a rough idea of how questions will display across different screen sizes, and lets you test the overall activity flow. However, the activity's appearance may vary on different devices and mobile browsers. Testing on a real device before publishing and distributing the activity is highly recommended.

  13. On the activity toolbar, click Save.
